ART 307 - Artist Research for Vase

David Sweeney
Where I found this…

Made from handcrafted pewter, the vase stands proud when it is full of water, though as the level of water evaporates, the vase starts to lie down. An obvious metaphor for life.

Materials are heavier than the traditional glass vase, and much less fragile as well.

The artist was trying to convey a metaphor for life, the balancing act, and ups and downs. Also, he developed a vessel that helps communicate the flower’s needs to its owner.

I perceived it as being a clever design, and useful in that it helps to ensure your beautiful flowers survive as long as possible. It’s definitely a more functional version of the traditional vase.

Harry Allen

Materials: 100% Resin, marble, glass and stainless steel.
"Bestow Hand Hook by Harry Allen. Cast from the designer's hand. Accompanied by a glass vial and metal cup, Bestow may be used as a vase or candlestick holder. Includes wall mounting hardware."

The materials are different in that instead of a vessel on a table, the vessel is mounted to the wall. And the vessel itself isn’t the focus of the piece as a whole.
I think I artist was trying to convey a sense of romance, or some other positive message. The hand is presenting the flowers to the viewer, almost as a gift.
I think it could perceived as funny, romantic, or even somewhat creepy. It just depends upon the audience. I think the romantic angle is the most obvious, especially when you see that the piece doubles as a candleholder.

T H + E Design Team - Vazu flat pack vase
Materials: polyethylene and polyester (soft plastic-y)

The materials used in this design could be mistaken for glass at first glance, but upon further inspection are much more flexible and inexpensive to make.
Basically a decorative and more durable plastic bag, the artist meant for this lightweight design to be convenient and versatile. Vazu comes in multiple shapes and a variety of colors and patterns, while also being easily transported, and inexpensive to own.
I liked this design because they can be elegant, or playful depending upon the style you chose. I also liked the idea of being able to spontaneous pick wild flowers, or give a surprise last minute gift while traveling.
