ART 318 Project 1 Research

Original inspiration: Mandalas
Mandala: Sanskrit word meaning "circle"
Traditionally: A Buddhist spiritual teaching tool, used to help establish a sacred space, and as an aid for meditation and trance induction. For focusing one's attention.
The mandala has 4 gates facing the 4 corners of the world. Also depicts 8 Buddhas, 4 male and 4 female.

Tibetan monks and their sand mandalas

These particular monks came to visit The American Visionary Art Museum this past summer and during their week long visit they created this beautiful sand painted mandala. Upon its completion, they blew the entire artwork into the harbor.

Commonly: A generic term used to describe any plan, chart, or geometric pattern that represents cosmos metaphysically or symbolically on a micro or macroscopic scale.

Many mandalas contain the lotus flower in the center.

ART 307 HYPE Research and Ideas

For my hype project I researched a few different ideas, like the green movement and Hype street/public art.
Here's some of my brainstorming, along with some research...

This research made me think about public art and spreading a positive message. In recent months I've been a huge promoter of positive thinking, spreading good karma, and being kinder to other people in general.
These will be the ideas behind my HYPE project.

Here are some other examples of smile initiatives, positive campaigns, and love projects...

Encourages confidence in young women by promoting positive messages on balloons
Encourages laughter, as it brings the world together, helps form bonds, and decreases stress while promoting a happy healthy life

Promoting kindness

Here's a drawing a did a few months ago, somewhat relevant to my underlying idea for this project

I've also got a lot of idioms stuck in my head that would help to promote a positive message...here's a list of general ones.

And some statistics about smiling...
Promotes a good, happy feeling
Helps spread that feeling to others
Reduces stress
to name a few...

Possible materials
stained glass
needle felting
metal
wood (laser cut)

Would like to make some kind of pins, buttons, hand outs, posters/flyers that promote positive messages, something that people could pay forward or pass on to others.

Would like to do some kind of public/street art, but that might get me into trouble with the authorities...
