ART 419 - Container/Locket Design Review

Artist Statement for final piece:

“Time is of your own making”

For my locket, I began by investigating the preciousness of time. How it is ongoing, yet limited, cyclical, yet disjointed, and generally transformative in nature. These same characteristics could be applied when thinking of waves in the ocean. They repeatedly crash in a seemingly random order, while stones, trash, and organic matter tumble beneath the waters surface. As time goes on these ocean treasures dissolve, get buried, or take on new forms. When looking at my wave shaped form, you can see how the glass on either side of the spinner is inspired by the changes that take place over a period of time, be in underneath ocean waves, or in a person's life. On the inside of the locket is the quote,”Time is of your own making”, meant to inspire the wearer or viewer to make the most of their own transformation.

Research

Victorian Mourning Jewelry

Commonly made with Jet, a semi precious gemstone, and gold. Difficult to cut and carve, it coined the term "jet black". Often seen with soft, scalloped,or otherwise curves edge pattern.

Relics/Reliquaries

Relics are item,s usually related to a saint or other important religious figure, are contained within decorative reliquaries. Used by many different religions, often containing piece of hair, bone, or other personal items belonging to the deceased.

Buddhist Reliquaries

Stupa: Mound like or semi-hemispherical structure containing a buddhist relic. Usually ashes or remains of the Buddha, his disciples, or other lay saints contained inside. Could be small or very large (building sized) reliquary.

5 purified elements represented in stupa:
- square base represents earth
- dome represents water
- conical spire represents fire
- lotus parasol & crescent moon represent air
- sun and dissolving point represent the element of space

Reliquaries in Christianity

Reliquaries vary in size/shape. Could be pendant, box, cross shaped, or other, sometimes shape would be determined by the relic inside (ex. bones)

Other religious reliquaries...

Status objects/Socio-econonmic signifiers

Status symbols in America usually have to do with brand names and current social trends. Celebrities as well as other rich, famous, or powerful social figures influence what the rest of society views as being "valuable" "trendy" or "luxury".

Preciousness: Thoughts & Images

Highlights:
-preciousness has to do with value/worth ( personal, social, or both )
- strong feeling of attachment or need
-something you wouldn't want to misplace or be without

What do I consider precious?

Life, family, friends, sleep, time, freedom, my way of being

For the most part, not material things. But here are some precious gemstones, and of course...

Sketches

Considered objects that would represent my precious things. Stuff like mementos from my childhood, pictures, time spent with my mom, time literally, my car keys which represent my freedom and independence, plants and living things that would represent growth and transformation. Things that bring balance to my life and calm to my state of being, like yoga and positive thinking.

Mostly I thought about time and how it's ongoing and transformative.

Different devices to tell or measure time
- watch
- digital clock
-sundial
-hourglass
-stopwatch
-timer

Decided in the end that I really want to incorporate the sea glass and the ocean
Want to show passage of time by incorporating two piece of glass, one that's freshly broken and jagged, and one that has been tumbled around in the ocean for an undetermined amount of time

Close ups of initial sketches w/ thoughts of incorporating a real time telling element.
Idea of literal versus abstract time.

How to make the glass(es) rotate?

Sand? Hourglass? Too much.

Or to open with opposite glasses facing one another?

Include an etched quote about time?

Playing around with shapes of container, round seems too boring.
How to hold glass?
Rotate using a turner similar to that of a pocket watch.

New shape(s) sketched after looking at images of waves breaking.

Closest to scale
approx. 2.5" x 2.5" x 2"

Next steps: Do a rhino drawing of final design.
Figure out...
-where hinges fit
- how to treat inside metal
- outside etching and pierced pattern
- inside quote
- how to fasten glass pieces
- how to construct turner/rotating piece
- chain suspension (like a pocket watch)

more sketches to follow...
